Our purpose for Kings Kids is to prepare your child academically and socially for kindergarten as well as nurture them spiritually. Basically, we're here to learn but have fun while we're doing it.
The Kings Kids program is for pre-kindergarten students only and is open on Tuesday and Thursdays, from 9:00AM to 12:00PM, September - June. We run on the same schedule as the Snowline School District with snow days (when applicable) as well. Our class size is limited to 20 students with two teachers, so our teacher/student ratio is 10 to 1.
Regular attendance is encouraged for each child in order for them to reap the maximum benefits of the program. Students enrolled in the program must have independent bathroom habits. In Christian love, we request that children with coughs, colds, fevers, or any sign of coming down with an illness not attend until well. If a child comes to school with a runny nose due to a cold or shows signs of ill-health, we will contact that parent to come pick up their child.
Because our students are pre-schoolers, we are building that firm foundation of learning the basics. Specifically with regard to letters, we introduce our alphabet with the goal of mastering letter recognition. When we show them flash cards of the letter "Aa", we want them to know that it is a letter "Aa" and so forth. We also want them to know the sounds that our alphabet letters make. Most programs teach the long and short sounds of each letter and that is fine, but letters make other sounds too! This is where our phonograms come in.
We use the language arts program called The Writing Road to Reading, also called the Spalding Method. This is a total language arts approach that integrates all of the language strands. Through direct instruction, children are carefully taught listening, speaking, spelling, writing and reading. This program emphasizes multi-sensory instruction by allowing students to see, hear, say, and write sounds and words. The goal of this program is to create lifelong learners by developing skilled readers, critical listeners, accomplished speakers, accurate spellers and confident writers. We begin here at Kings Kids with the extreme basics of this program - the first 26 phonograms and the beginning writing approach. Again, because we are pre-schoolers, we only introduce the first 26 of 70 phonograms that represent 45 common English speech sounds. Please be aware that we are just introducing phonograms, not mastering them.
Along with your monthly newsletter, we provide a copy of the phonograms each month for your information only. If your child shows signs of being ready to review these at home, please feel free to do so. But if your child is not ready, please do not feel overwhelmed that "he/she just isn't getting it", they will in time.
With regard to homework, we do give weekly homework. This work is to assist the students in their small motor skills. We limit our homework to 4 pages per week that consist of fun things like cutting, coloring, gluing, dot to dot and so on. First and foremost on our list is to get them to write their name correctly. Yes, there will be times when they write their name perfectly backwards. Do not be alarmed as this is part of their development. When this occurs, it won't be long before they will be writing it correctly.
There are things we want to master and things we will be introducing. You will receive quarterly progress reports as a helpful tool for you to gauge your child's development. Please remember that each child develops at a different rate and that no two children are alike, although all of the skills on our progress reports are appropriate for the age level of your child.
Children should be appropriately dressed for a day of academics, crafts and play. Remember, sometimes the weather will change halfway through the morning. Children will not be permitted to go outside unless appropriately dressed for the weather and for safety (no flip flops, etc.). Please put your child's name on their jackets, sweaters, lunchboxes, etc..
All children are to bring their own snacks, either in a lunch box or lunch sack with their names on them. An example of a snack would be 1/2 sandwich, drink, goodie. Please do not send a three course meal as snack time is limited to 15-20 minutes.
Tuition for the Kings Kids program is $50 per month, per child. If paying by check, please make checks payable to Calvary Chapel of Phelan. Tuition envelopes will be provided throughout the month on the Kings Kids information bulletin board.
Our classroom doors are open to parents of enrolled students to come in and observe any time - no appointment necessary. For those not currently enrolled in our program, you are welcome to come and visit our classrooms as well, but we ask that you contact the office first.
